Luffa gourd

There are basically two kinds of luffa gourd, or vegetable sponge. Many luffas are mixtures of the two varieties. They have bright yellow flowers blooming in the morning and are very much like by our common honey bee. The ball luffa (A miniature version) is less widely grown.

• Ridged luffa. Luffa acutangula has ten ridges in its papery outer shell. The fruit is about 4 inches in diameter, 15 inches in length.

• Luffa. Also dish rag gourd. Luffa cylindrica is grown widely in the United States. Can grow  up to 30-inches and have a diameter of over 5 inches. The longer ones have been sometimes called "Mexican Luffa".

• Mini luffa. Commonly called the hedgehog gourd. When peeled they are about the size of a golf ball with very fine whitish fibrous netting captured in a ball shape and their other skin is cover with spikes. The luffa ball is so light it almost floats in the air.

LUFFA GOURD

Carolina Gourds and Seeds sells luffa gourds and luffa pieces cut into 1/2 inch slices. The soaps that you make can have the luffa right inside of the soap to help exfoliate dry or rough skin. All luffa gourds sponges and pieces are clean and ready to be used in soap making.
